Hedes & Dekes: New York Library Goes Green

leave a comment »

The new 6.7 million dollar public library in Manhattan’s Battery Park bridges the ancient and advanced. The library, which was 11 years in the making, is green.

The New York Times reports that recycled materials can be found throughout the 10,00o0 square foot structure, including old truck tires and a staircase made from recycled glass.

The new green library has people wondering if the two worlds of eco-friendly and library will merge and if extravagant spending is practical during these economic times.  But New York Public Library president Paul LeClerc tells the Times that a library like this one is especially important now when “people are depending on libraries more than ever for free resources and job assistance.”
